These images are small range of images from my bilingual book Sicily Sulphur Mines, the images aimed to incorporate old photos as my great grandfather was a miner in the sulphur mines in Cianciana I was also given photos by the council in Cianciana. I took of the land and what remains of the sulphur mines that would have once been a thrifting industry. I created this project to shed light on the pride people take in rich history and culture of Cianciana where they live by preserving these memories for future generations.
The industry was active during the period of 1832 till 1965. I wanted to tell the horrors that where the working conditions of the mines and the effects that mining sulphur had on the health of the men and boys who worked there. The men and boys who worked in the mines often worked with a constant temperature of 37.5 or higher this was because the temperatures were unbearable in the mines because the temperature in the mines was between 38 and 40 degrees. This was caused by the oxidation of the sulphur in contact with oxygen. I would specifically like to shed a light on the treatment of the young boys who began working in the mines at the young age of 6.
